In laser haemorrhoidoplasty a thin laser fibre is passed into the pile mass and the energy shrinks it from within, leaving the overlying skin intact. Because there is no cut-and-excise wound, there is no open packing, less post-operative pain, and most patients are discharged the same day. The same principle is used for anal fissure and to seal a fistula tract. Whether it suits you depends on the grade and extent of disease, which is assessed at examination.
What is the difference between laparoscopic and robotic surgery?
Both are keyhole approaches through small ports rather than a long incision. In laparoscopy the surgeon holds straight instruments and views a 2D monitor. In robotic surgery the surgeon operates from a console with 3D vision and wristed instruments that bend like a hand, which helps most in deep or tight spaces — the pelvis, the pancreas, complex hernia planes. It depends entirely on the operation and on you. Day-care laser proctology and straightforward laparoscopic procedures usually mean a short stay and an early return to light activity; major cancer and pancreatic resections need considerably longer. Your surgeon will give you a specific timeline at the pre-operative discussion — treat any general figure you read online, including here, as an approximation rather than a promise.
